Can God Heal Us Today?-What The Bible Says About Healing In Jesus’ Name
What does the Bible say about healing in Jesus’ name? Is it something that we as Christians should be doing? Janis explores the topic by looking at the disciples, and how they were healing in Jesus’ name.
God Has The Power To Heal
I usually have two or three non-fiction biblical books on the go at the same time. Right now I am reading Smith Wigglesworth – Apostle of Faith and Healing by Francis MacNutt. I am also reading the Bible.
Our pastor spoke on healing two weeks ago. God has been focusing me on this topic.
My big question is: Why has the church as a whole lost the connection with healing? Where is this power that God spoke about through Jesus and in Acts?
I believe God’s power to heal is here and now. From personal experience of being healed I know that God works powerfully in us and through others to help us. I am not discounting doctors and other professionals. He uses them too.
Why then are so many Christians suffering, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally?
Focus On Jesus
One answer is Focus – I know that our focus does not stay on Jesus. There is so much of the world around us with self-help ideas, and with people saying that prayer doesn’t work.
It’s hard to know what to believe, isn’t it?
Let’s look at what the Bible says. I read through Luke 9 this morning and found some wonderful nuggets about how Jesus showed us and the apostles how to heal. Listen to the first part of Luke 9 in The Message:
“Jesus now called the Twelve and gave them AUTHORITY and POWER to deal with all the demons and cure diseases. He commissioned them to preach the news of God’s Kingdom and heal the sick.”
Throughout this chapter Jesus told us these thoughts:
Jesus said: You are the equipment. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, My way, to finding yourself.
Jesus exclaimed to them about what a generation they were. He said they had no sense of God. They had no focus in their lives.
Your Spirit Makes The Difference
Listen to Luke 9:48
“You become great by accepting not asserting. Your spirit, not your size, makes the difference.”
My spirit makes the difference?! That means I need a closeness to God. That means reading His word and praying to Him about all things.
The Disciples Were Given The Power To Heal
And finally listen to Luke 9:61-62
“No procrastination. No backwards looks. You can’t put God’s Kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.”
If you hear people say – that was then and this is now, please look into the book of Acts. In Acts Jesus had risen, Pentecost had come. Jesus had given us The Holy Spirit, The Helper. And the disciples were healing people. Yes they were.
Listen to Acts 5:15-16
“They even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on stretchers and bedrolls, hoping they would be touched by Peter’s shadow when he walked by. They came from the villages surrounding Jerusalem, throngs of them, bringing the sick and bedeviled. And they all were healed.”
Did you hear that? “And they all were healed.”
Healing In Jesus’ Name
I believe that the disciples were given the power to heal in Jesus’ name. I believe that we have the same power.
Let’s believe and let’s deliver our friends and family from sickness, from infirmities, from demons. Let’s lead them to Jesus. He has the power to heal today.
Until next time, read God’s Word and see what it says about healing in Jesus’ name.
