Food For The Masses
It’s a rare occasion these days when millions of non-believers collectively get to hear the wonderful name of Jesus being proclaimed. There are certainly Evangelists with large scale television ministries that broadcast around the world, but they in many ways are preaching to the choir, with much of their audience falling into the category of believers already.
The sun rose beautifully last Saturday morning, stretching far across a clear blue sky. I was awake earlier than usual; not for the purpose of taking in the sunrise, but waking as a result of my wife’s early morning activity. She like so many millions of others, had set an unusually early Saturday morning alarm, so she might bear witness to something quite spectacular; to be a couch participant in the pomp and circumstance of the wedding of Harry and Megan, the “Royal Wedding.”
A Wedding and An Historical Event
I planned on enjoying at least another hour or so in bed, but the smell of coffee and the sounds from the tv filtering through the house on this quiet Saturday prompted my curious feet to exit from my cozy bed, and move in the direction of the living room. The same brilliant early morning sunshine that had beamed brightly through my bedroom window, was 4 hours ahead and beaming even brighter, across the green English countryside; which was lined with tens of thousands of wedding well-wishers, eager spectators to this historical event.
All our major news networks, Canadian and American; not to mention those from dozens of other countries around the world, were broadcasting live from the scene. That in and of itself is a rare occasion. The media lead-up to this special day, was on par with what we see when the Olympics broadcasts globally every 4 years. It has been reported that almost 18 million Brits tuned into watch, while more than two billion people worldwide watched the event. Two billion people; that’s a staggering number. That truly does represent a great part of the world.
The Wedding Ceremony
The long prelude to the actual ceremony, was well choreographed with camera shots from various vantage points, checking the movements of the many carriages, guards, limos, and horsemen that were part of this grand parade. The red-carpet arrivals at St. Georges Chapel in Windsor Castle (where the actual ceremony would take place) did not disappoint. This was definitely a “who’s who” of many of the worlds elite celebrities, all gathered for the same reason; to honor the young prince, and his beautiful bride to be.
With any wedding, the highlight is of course the actual ceremony; when the bride and groom are declaring their love for each other….in the promises and exchanges made during the vows. This is when those gathered and those viewing from home are completely engaged, realizing a large moment in history is unfolding before their eyes.
The Name of Jesus
And it was at this moment, when time and time again, the name of Jesus was mentioned, and the love of God referenced and called upon. It was when the seated Prince and his Bride, smiled and embraced a 14-minute sermon from American Bishop Michael Curry. Chosen by the couple, Bishop Curry’s loving and informal address was the most tweeted moment of the wedding, garnering over 40,000 tweets per minute. News cameras scanned the congregation, showing the various reactions; many captivated at this never before heard “soul preachin”, that lit up St. George’s Chapel.
The Power of God
Celebrities were quick to tweet about the Reverend’s address on Twitter. Their comments may have been phrased in the context of a casual tweet, but clearly the power of God was working through the Reverend, and the masses were feeling it.
Naomi Campbell tweeted: “Glued to the royal wedding has me in tears!! This is so beautiful… Yes … taking it to church!! Pastor ‘when love is the way’.”
Paralympic Gold Medalist Giles Long added: “Rev Michael Curry is absolutely ripping it up! Go big or go home. Amen.”
British and American Celebrity Broadcaster Piers Morgan added: “Wow. Still reeling from Rev Curry. What a moment. What a guy! It’s historic – and brilliant.”
Former Labor Party leader Ed Miliband said the Bishop could “almost make me a believer”. I wonder if he realized he was quoting almost exactly, the words uttered over 2000 years ago from King Agrippa to the Apostle Paul, recorded in Acts 26:28 “Then Agrippa said unto Paul, almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.”
God Love You
When Bishop Curry was nearing the end of his sermon, he affectionately said to the bride and groom: “My brother, my sister, God love you, God bless you, and may God hold us all in those almighty hands of love.”
I was so glad I crawled out of bed early, and joined my wife, to hear what the world heard on this beautiful sunny morning. To hear what over 2 billion people heard; Gods love, and the declaration of his Son Jesus Christ, to the masses.
In the 2nd chapter of Philippians we read of Jesus, that “God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The Royal Family in Agreement With the Word of God
The Psalmist says: “Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.”
This truly, for me, was a moment to behold. Just consider, that the most prominent and influential Royal family on the planet, was in submission to, and in agreement with the word of God, and that through the invitation by Meghan and Harry to a preacher man from America; the world… the masses were being fed.
May God bless forever Meghan and Harry, the young new bride and groom, and may the words that echoed through the historic halls of St. George’s Chapel, ring in the ears of all who heard them; a comfort to believers, a call out to the masses.
