Jesus Can Open Up Your Eyes
In this story about a man born blind, Jesus performs a miraculous healing and opens the man’s eyes. Jesus can open up your eyes too!
A Man Born Blind
John 9:1-3 (ESV) reads like this:
“As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.’”
John 9:1-3
It was commonly thought in biblical times that illness and physical disabilities were the result of sin. In fact, some people believe that to this day.
Jesus’ disciples held this misconception and wanted to know if this particular man was born blind because of his own sin or because of the sin of his parents. It doesn’t appear that they even considered any other possible causes.
But Jesus set them straight. He said that neither the man’s sin nor his parents’ was the case. Now, He wasn’t saying that the individuals hadn’t sinned, for Romans 3:23 (ESV) says that “all have sinned.” But He was saying that the man’s blindness was not a result of sin.
And the Lord went on to say that the reason the man was born without sight was so “the works of God might be displayed in him.” Jesus then healed the man and thus, God was glorified and His works displayed.
Miracles Rejected
Imagine someone you know that was born with a physical or mental challenge. Now imagine what it would be like if the Lord chose to heal that individual. Would those who reject Jesus seek to find an alternative explanation? Would the individual’s members become believers in Jesus Christ or would they too try to explain it away or simply say, “That’s okay for her, but it’s not for me.”
That’s pretty much what happened with the man born blind, but he knew what he knew. Though he wasn’t educated in spiritual matters he knew that Jesus must have been sent by God. Otherwise, how could he possibly have performed this amazing miracle?
His parents were afraid of being thrown out of fellowship, so they wouldn’t commit to the source of their son’s healing. Now, before we judge them too harshly, we must examine ourselves. Are we convinced that Jesus is who He says He is? Are we convinced that He can and does do amazing things in our lives—even though those things may not seem as dramatic? Are we willing to make Him know even if others taunt us, make fun of us, or worse?
And let’s consider for a moment what Jesus does for us when we come to Him, ask for the forgiveness of our sins, and accept the salvation He secured for us when He died on Calvary’s cross. He truly does heal us from blindness—spiritual blindness. He gives us sight and reveals amazing things to us.
Are Your Eyes Open?
What about you? What has God done in your life? How has Jesus opened your eyes?
And if you have questions, He is more than willing to make the answers known. After all, it says in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
This is not a carte blanche guarantee that you can have whatever you ask for, but if you do what to know God, just ask. He will make Himself known to you and open your spiritual eyes.
