Remember God – The Importance Of Remembering
Throughout the Bible we read about the importance of remembering what God has done in our life. Failing to do so can affect not only us but also those around us. God’s chosen people are examples of this.
Second Kings 17:6 says, “… the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria” (ESV).
Why did this happen?
Verse 7 says, “And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods” (ESV).
While I’ve written these devotionals to challenge us, as individuals and families, to serve the Lord more and more faithfully, I came to realize that the more of us who do so, the more our communities—and even our nations—will benefit.
Now, I’m not talking about taking political action, electing officials who share our worldview, or even petitioning to get the laws changed. I’ll leave those subjects for others.
I am, however, talking about the importance of remembering—remembering who God is and remembering what He has done in our life.
How Can We Remember God? Read The Bible!
Just where should we start?
We must dig into God’s Word. The Scriptures as a whole, from Genesis to Revelation, reveal God’s character. They teach us who He is and what He has done.
His Word is precious, and as it says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (ESV).
How Can We Remember God? Look Around!
And if we keep our eyes open, we will learn more about Him as we go about our everyday lives.
Romans 1:20 says, “For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse” (ESV).
Just take a look at the natural world around you. While the study of creation isn’t a substitute for the study of the Scriptures, it does emphasize what we learn there, from the complexity of a single cell to the vastness of the universe.
It is important to look outward to give us the proper context for examining our own lives. But for most of us, our conversion story is where the wonder becomes personal.
Like King David says in Psalm 8:3-4, we may find ourselves asking, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (ESV)
How Can We Remember God? Think Of Jesus’ Sacrifice!
And when we think that God sent His Son to die in our place and to rise again, victorious over sin and death, that we may forever live with Him in heaven, it is beyond our comprehension. No matter how long ago it was that we asked Jesus to be our Saviour, it should cause us awe and wonder. It should be a memory we share with all who will listen—even those who don’t really want to hear.
Life is busy. If you’re anything like me, you’re rushing from one thing to the next to the next. And when you do take a breather, you may want nothing more than to simply plop down and relax.
The Dangers of Failing To Remember God
But forgetting what we’ve already learned about the God of the universe—and failing to remember and share what He has done in our life—will impact us, our family, and the community around us. And when this is the case, those lives go on to affect others and the world forgets the God who created and sustains all things. They worship others gods, gods such as busyness, affluence, material possessions.
We may not think we can change the world, but let’s remember and share what God has done and watch what He can yet do.
Teaching Your Family To Remember God
I wrote a poem many years ago that summarized what I had learned about God at each stage of life. If I hunt that up, I may share it with you at some point. And I’m sure I could add to it with the insight the Lord has continued to give.
Maybe you don’t write poetry, but you may want to sit down and record evidences of God’s involvement in your life. You can do it alone or as a family. One of the things you may include is the fact that you came across HopeStreamRadio and are learning more about Him as you listen to the podcasts and read the blog.

Keep an eye out for how creation and your day-to-day life testify to the truth of Scripture—and don’t forget to share it with others.
Who knows? You may change the course of a nation. At least you’ll have a big impact on those whose lives intersect your own.
